About Dartmouth

Dartmouth is a magical place with its own unique sense of style especially during summer time!

Explore winding Elizabethan streets with independent shopsart galleries and a bustling market. Enjoy gourmet restaurants, bistros, bars and cosy cafes or mooch around the quayside and River Dart estuary.

The best time to visit Dartmouth for water-related activities, however, has to be August when the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta transforms the town into a hub of water-borne festivities. The town’s population at this time swells from 6,000 to 100,000 as visitors from all over descend upon Dartmouth to take part in or watch the various rowing and sailing competitions. The party atmosphere is enhanced by the other sporting activities, air displays, fairground rides, live music, competitions, a shopping village and two spectacular firework displays.

The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta is labelled the ‘Best in the West’, and always lives up to its reputation with superb competition and brilliant entertainment!

Amongst the many events held during the Regatta, one of the highlights is undoubtedly the sailing.  Add to this the variety of other popular events which include a Royal Navy Guardship, the RAF Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, The Blades Aerobatic Team led by Dartmouth’s very own former Red Arrows pilot, Mark Cutmore, two firework displays, an Illuminated River Procession, the fairground, the street market, the shopping village, helicopter displays, a steamboat rally, the Regatta Ball, the Regatta Shindig and the Regatta Rock and it becomes difficult to choose what to see or do!

What experience do I need?

You don't need any race experience but ideally you should be at RYA Competent Crew level or higher to get the most out of this event. Our race skippers are all RYA certified instructors and are more than qualified to get you up to scratch on the racing front!

About the boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.
