JOG Dartmouth Offshore Race

A race for those of you who want night hours, offshore experience, milebuilding and adding more to your racing CV!   This event will start with a full day of race preparation on Friday before the start of the race at 1600hrs.    It's an 85 mile run so expect to be racing and experiencing watchkeeping for 15 hours or so before arriving in Dartmouth for a hearty breakfast on Saturday morning!!

This is real adventure sailing and you will experience a huge amount with the night sailing hours - it will be a sailing adventure - great for anyone doing their RYA training and a memorable trip, possibly a little longer than you have tried before but not to be missed, whatever the weather!

Starts:  09:00 Friday at Girls for Sail office at Shepards Wharf Marina

Finishes: Ends 4pm Sunday

About The Event

A really great offshore race down the South Coast and into the beautiful sheltered town of Dartmouth.   You will be in the company of the race fleet through the night and will pick off the lighthouses on the passing headlands as you go.

If you are looking to complete your Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster and need to gain some extra miles then this is just the one for you!

You will learn about the tidal gates and working around the headlands plus race tactics along the way.

We meet Friday morning and after a check of the weather and tides, following a full safety brief we'll head out to the start line mid afternoon.

Your skipper is RYA qualified and you can take advantage of her knowledge, either learning the basics of sailing, wind awareness, parts of the boat and of course how to sail it or concentrating on particular areas you wish to practice! You will be involved throughout the race, whether taking the helm, changing a sail, trimming or learning some navigation tips and checking your knowledge of lights.  This is a super race and nothing beats an early morning arrival into Dartmouth.

The boat

We mostly coach on yachts of between 37 and 41ft. Our yachts have been specifically chosen as they are easy to handle, great for learning! There is no denying us girls sometimes don't have the physical strength of the boys but with our technical ability and a well-chosen yacht we can do just as well. You will usually find yourself aboard an Élan 37, Jeanneau 37 or a Beneteau 40.7. All of your time will be spent living as crew-mates on your yacht.  Most of the yachts have 9/10 berths with 3 cabins and a saloon so the boats will normally have 2 persons in each cabin i.e. 6 - this is always the case for an RYA course, MAX 6 persons on-board. On some events e.g. races we use the saloon which can sleep an additional 2-4 person.

About Cowes

Cowes is widely credited as being the birthplace of UK yachting, seeing hundreds of 'yachties' descend every year on the seaside town and swelling its resident population multifold!

With a wealth of activities on and off the water and a year-round mild, sunny climate the island attracts loyal visitors and second home owners alike all year round but especially during the spring and summer months when the world class sailing conditions attract professional sailors from around the world to take part in famous regattas and races - as well as thousands of spectators who gather shoreside to watch the dramas unfold.

Easily reached by high speed passenger ferry, car ferry or even hovercraft (the island has the last remaining hovercraft service in the world) from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth on the mainland, the island is the perfect destination for young and old alike with plenty to see, eat and do.
