What the Girls Had to Say

"Cowes week with Girls for Sail was the perfect combination of serious sailing and fantastic fun. There were some real pinch-yourself moments- I feel like I've achieved so much!" Karen, Cowes Week

Starts: 10am, Friday - Cowes

Finishes: 9am, Saturday - Cowes

About the event

Cowes week is the biggest regatta on the UK's sailing calendar taking place at the beginning of August every year. The regatta has been in existence since 1826 and is a real Solent tradition. Cowes regatta extends over a magnificent 7 days offering some of the most exciting racing conditions on the compact Solent waters. Strong tides, erratic weather and 900 competitors from around the world, certainly make this a challenging event - on and off the water. At GFS we develop our racing teams from Day One. Your instructor will coach you and you fellow female crew mates, utilising the skills in the group so that you each contribute to the speed and safe operation of a yacht in a large fleet.  Our instructors work with a group of 8-12 ladies starting on training day* and then proceed to coach you on your specific role as we head out to race against some of the best sailors in the UK. It is fantastic to be able to line up with the elite and compete as we tack and gybe our way around the complex courses set by the excellent race organisers.

Serious racing is of course also accompanied by some serious socialising and we ensure we attend as many of the off the water events as we have the energy for! Action packed racing, hundreds of yachts, thousands of competitors this event is a must on the annual calendar. Each evening our yachts moor up in our reserved berth in Cowes, so there is plenty of opportunity to get involved in the popular Cowes social scene including Ladies Day on the Tuesday where we're all encouraged to wear stripey clothing and there are spot prizes both on and off the water - our day, girls! Friday evening is normally spent watching the infamous fireworks from the terrace of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club whilst enjoying a great BBQ - marvellous!

We enter both the non-spinnaker and spinnaker classes meaning we can offer options for all levels of experience to come and join us racing! If you're new to sailing or racing - or just looking for a more relaxed race week, then our non-spinnaker boat will be perfect for you. Racing without the added stress of flying a spinnaker on the downwind legs gives us more time to focus on getting to grips with the basics of racing such as sail trim, sail changes and perfecting our mark roundings. We'll expect to get better and better as the week goes on - the best sports teams in the world do so well as they spend so much time training and playing together - and yacht racing is no different!

Or if you already have some race experience. have never raced before but can sail - or if you just want to push yourself - then our spinnaker race boat will be just the ticket! Racing with a spinnaker enables us to take a much more direct downwind route to our next course mark - but does add an extra element of excitement to racing, especially when it comes to gybing or dropping the spinnaker! We really do have to work as a team to do this quickly and successfully - the aim is to avoid the dreaded 'wine glass' when hoisting - or letting it fall into the water when we drop it! Plus when the breeze picks up (as it often does in the afternoons if the sun's out!) then everything suddenly becomes a lot livelier as the loads on our sheets and guys increases significantly - safety and good communication is absolutely vital!

If you're unsure which boat to join then do get in touch so we can chat through your experience and help you decide which option is best for you. We can also discuss pre-race training options such as our Sail Trimming and Spinnaker weekend if you'd like to join the spinnaker class but are worried about not having quite enough experience. And if you're new to sailing but would like to join us for what is the most exciting week in the sailing calendar, then why not talk to us about coming on one of our Start Sailing weekends first!

Additional Info:

OTHER ACTIVITIES: The infamous Cowes beer tent is alive straight after racing as the crews come ashore to relax and swap stories over a few post race drinks. The fun is non-stop and the buzz is really exhilarating. Cowes is a wonderful place in the summer sunshine. The small high street is a hive of activity with excellent restaurants and pubs which are all full of life and plenty of great 'yachties' shops too.  One of the social highlights is the final night party on Friday with the most amazing fireworks display - A MUST DO night out! On the other evenings, there is a huge programme of entertainment with well-known bands featured on the main stage. There are a huge range of pubs, restaurants and even black tie dinners to attend so together we can coordinate the social programme to make sure the whole team are happy.

If you work it out...900 boats with an average of 10 people aboard that's ....9000 wonder lil ole Cowes is buzzing!! Sadly, it's still exceptionally male dominated so the beer tents are still packed with happy chaps having lots of racing discussions. That's why we need YOU! Our objective is to see 50% of the participants at Cowes week female, as opposed the current 20%!
